Academic Literacy Plan

How effective is the Academic Literacy Plan?  I am told to teach systematically and I believe this is the best way for an entire school to teach a set of 6 skills and 3 habits to a school that has over 1800 students.  Others may argue that this systematic approach of teaching inhibits a teacher's creativity within their classroom or does it?

  1. I think that at a certain extent it is better to teach a large mass of students the same 3 habits and 6 skills in a systematic way, therefore they each learn the same thing. Though some teachers teach better when they use their own creative techniques, and when they do I believe the student gets more out of the lesson. Thus, I think that teachers should have the ability to teach the 3 habits and 6 skills the way they please.

  2. I think it's a good way to help students reach their goals. The habits of mind and the college readiness skills get students to actually use their brain and strive for the goals.

  3. I think that the Academic Literacy Plan is a good approach to teach students, as it is a way for them to grasp a concept in a way all others are. Using this plan, students are required to keep building on it with practice so that it eventually becomes second nature. With it burned in the back of their mind, they are able to later apply it to college and life in a career.

  4. This academic literacy plan is a very good tool to help students to understand the concepts. It can show a students strengths and weaknesses , however , this is one of the best ways to help a student approach their goals.

  5. i think the academic literacy plan is effective. it certainly does seem to prepare us students for college/university. i believe we can work through the 6 skills and 3 habits and still be creative in the class.

  6. I find the ALP hinders the teachers creativity in the classroom and keeps each class very similar rendering them boring. Also by focusing solely on the ALP for the first week of school and also other periods of time after we loose valuable school time. Frankly I find the ALP a hindrance and just another thing to memorize. I feel that with a good teacher you should learn these things naturally in a classroom WITHOUT having to focus on them.

  7. I agree with Danaë Villicana and Monique Geisen, in that I believe that the academic literacy plan definitely inhibits a teachers ability to be original and teach with their own style. However, I also think the sets of skills trying to be taught to us students are very important ones for college and life. By teaching it in a systematic way the teacher is limited to the point that all classes are the same, just of a different subject, and clearly that's not how life is. For now, the system is great, but students should know that once they get out of high school no ones going to point out what skills they need to use.

  9. I feel that the academic literacy plan and habits of mind have some lessons to be learned to them that will help at school. But I have heard the words and definitions of the six ALP words so many times that a sense of mindless memorization comes into play. It is taught far too much the first week of school. I know that metacognition means thinking about thinking but I have no idea how that is going to help me be a better student. I am sure that it can help when applied to schoolwork, but the application to school is where it gets lost for me.

  10. I think the academic literacy plan is effective in helping us in our high school career and preparing us more effectively for college than other high school. And I think there are many ways to be creative with the ALP's.

  11. The Academic literacy plan is a good tool that helps students in there classes and think more effectively using the 6 skills and the three college readiness skills. Most kids at other schools don't care about there work and don't really use or know much about the 6 skills, but with the ALP students at Olympian are forced to use the skills in class and incorporate it in there work. Then we can use the skills learned from the ALP in college or work

  12. The Academic Literacy Plan is a good system to teach students that attend our school how to approach ideas, text passages,or even physical things surrounding us.I think the ALP indeed effects the way students think, but the ideas sometimes get taken for granted because it reaches this certain extent where the school over emphasizes the whole meaning. We are the only school in the district,I believe, that actually uses the "Habits of Mind" and the "Academic Literacy Plan" to our advantage, but it will benefit us when we reach our goal of a four year college. It'll help us independently, but also as a class.I don't think it so much "inhibits" your creativity,I think it adds on to it.

P.S Mr.Salazar,I think you are so cool and...we should be friends :)

  13. i believe that the academic literacy plan is effective but not in a systematical way because even though teachers have to teach the ALP a certain way each teacher wants to be creative about each skill and habit to make it seem fun and not a skill you just have to memorize. so i believe teachers should have the ability to be creative about the way they teach the ALP

  15. I believe the Academic Literacy Plan is a very effective way for students like us to use and learn from. Without any intellectual perseverance or synthesizing, how would we be able to be prepared for 4 years of college? The Academic Literacy Plan has skills we all use to help go through obstacles, and important habits for someone who wants to learn. Many people have been using the Academic Literacy Plan before, it's just that it's written out now. I'm pretty sure we all used skills like describing and relating and applying, right? I don't think it ever affected anyone's creativity.

  16. I believe that the academic literacy plan is the best way to teach a school with ideas in mind that makes a college student successful. Although some teachers have there own creative ways of teaching, they could combine both Olympians plan and the styles of the teachers to help students become successful in a four year college or university!

  17. I believe that, overall, the ALP is a great help to students as it helps them develop the skills that they will need to be successful throughout the rest of high school and college. While it does set guidelines as to what is being taught in the class, teachers can expend on it and add creativity into the assignment to make it more enjoyable. That is, if they wish to do so. :D

  18. The Academic Literacy Plan is a great way to teach students to be motivated in and out school. This plan is designed to carry on throughout life even after high school. This plan also works to make sure Olympian students will be accepted and successful in a 4 year college. I don't think plan crosses the point of creativity because it all depends on the teacher. The teacher can choose to put his/her own style into how they want to teach.

  19. I think the Acdemic Literacy Plan is an effective way of teaching because it gives a teacher a plan to base their teachings off of. Since there is a large amount ot topics to cover it is good that teachers have a plan to rely on.

  21. In my opinion the Academic Literacy Plan is very effective and helpful to many students. With the skills being taught, i believe that it can guide a student to be prepared for college or its future. Also, the habits of mind and college readiness skills will become very useful in the long run for a student to have a successful career further on in life.

  22. I think it does hurt a teachers potential to be creative in teaching us these skills. The more interesting the lesson, the more students pay attention. Forcing us to use unimaginative prompts about "description" or another skill in class makes it boring and makes us not want to do it
