Every time around this time of year there is a hurricane that passes through and leaves a path of destruction behind it. In southern California we are extremely lucky that we do not have to deal with hurricanes, so most of us do not know the feeling of fear that comes with it and does not seem to leave. In 2003 I was on a sail boat in the Caribbean ocean right before hurricane Claudette struck. I was seven and terrified that I would never come home from vacation. I can only imagine how it would feel to be scared to not only be there on vacation but to loose the home that you have always known. I can tell from experience that it is extremely intense rain and wind that feels like there is no end in sight. Hurricanes are a part of our world but they never seem to get any easier. No matter how much practice we have in getting prepared for it, it is still going to try and rip your life apart. Irene was the same, it may not have left as much destruction as they had anticipated but any kind of destruction can be very hard for people to deal with especially when you are seven.
